Welcome to the 2014 Team
Overview
You have agreed to go on a short term mission trip with Grace Bible Church Mission Team. You may be asking your self a few questions, like these:
- Are short term missions of any benefit?
- What’s in this for me?
- What’s in this for them?
Are short term missions of any benefit?
The paragraph below is paraphrased from “Called”:
Count up the total estimated cost of this trip. Divide that by $30. That’s how many children could survive for a month if you were to stay home and contribute that money to child sponsorship. So let’s be frank. If we’re going just to pass out medicines or help build a school, wouldn’t it be wiser to send the money, to provide wages so folks there could earn a salary?
It’s more complicated than that, isn’t it? How much is your presence worth? The love of Jesus flowing directly through you, by what you say and do and even the fact that you came there- how much is that worth?
How much is that Gospel worth to the lost?
In Luke 9:25 Jesus asks: “What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose his very soul?”
Our team does not drop in, hand out some pills then go home pleased with ourselves. We partner with the Dominicans, build relationships and walk the walk.
So what’s in it for me?
That depends on what you invest your energy in. And that depends entirely on what is in your heart. We will address these issues throughout the rest of the handbook.
Please keep in mind that this mission is not about tasks to be completed or numbers to be compiled. It’s about relationships. Relationships between: team members and God; team members and each other; team members and our in-country host; team members and Dominicans.
What’s in it for them?
That depends on how I answer the question above!
Logistics
The team will work together to raise support, gather supplies, pack and travel together. In the Dominican we will work with our hosts, Solid Rock International, which has been serving in-country since the mid-1980’s. We will stay at the Guesthouse in San Juan de la Maguana then travel daily to remote villages to set up outreach medical clinics.
The guesthouse is similar to a dormitory. There is running water, most of the time, and electricity, most of the time. All our meals and transportation are taken care of by Solid Rock.
