Corrie and her sister, Betsie, were separated from their parents whom they never saw again.

A few weeks after their arrival Corrie and Betsie were moved into a different barracks at the Concentration Camp. Corrie was dismayed to find it infested with fleas, however, Betsie immediately prayed thanking God for the fleas. Within several days the prisoners found that the Nazi guards would not enter their barracks because of the fleas. They were then able to hold Bible studies.

The amazing thing to me is that Betsie thanked God before she realized what the flea infestation meant.

Fleas will come in many forms during our mission: cold showers (or no showers), long lines at the airport, ever-changing travel requirements, long rides in a bus with no suspension, strange food, long hours of work, inability to communicate, and all the other "fleas" we may come in contact with across our short-term mission.

Now is the time to go before the Lord and ask Him for the strength to "be thankful" before we know why.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-24

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ. Do not quench the Spirit; do not despise prophetic utterance. But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil. Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass." NASB

~Roxanne

Missycleaverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05176460275126040832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3246617989307733633.post-43683417229234423222023-10-30T09:15:00.000-05:002023-10-30T09:15:15.771-05:00Monday, October 30 Devotional
82 Days till we leave

In Romans chapter 5, Paul writes of the relationship we enjoy with God the Father through faith in Christ, verses 1-2. Then he writes:

Not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance, and perseverance character, and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. (verses 3 -5, NKJV emphasis added)

While on mission, we will experience tribulation. If we stay home we will experience tribulation. Perhaps different problems but problems all the same.

While traveling we may sit i uncomfortable chairs, have long wait times, have to go through TSA, etc. In the Dominican we will experience waiting, language barriers, cultural differences, waking up early (there will be coffee and hot tea available), full work days, and possible cold showers.

But as verse 5 tells us, we have the Holy Spirit. It is because of Him, that we will not only endure these discomforts but glory in them.

I have been on secular missions and can truly see the difference. Nonbelievers work just as hard but cope differently: drinking, crude jokes, swearing, etc.

Will there be some hard times? Absolutely. But there will also be times of great joy, fellowship, and learning. Again, will there be hard times if we don't travel?

Absolutely.

We can look forward to this great adventure that God has called us to and, if not feel the glory, know that we are not alone. God the Father, Jesus our Savior, and the Holy Spirit within us go with us, and are already there.

And remember, God is never surprised.

Roxanne
Missycleaverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05176460275126040832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3246617989307733633.post-15745348314981284732023-10-17T16:21:00.004-05:002023-10-17T16:21:55.822-05:0094 days to Prepare
Tuesday, October 17

94 days till we leave for the Dominican Republic

1 Peter 3

15. But sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;

16. and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be to shame.

17. For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong.

18. For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit.

As we continue with preparations for travel in January, let us keep the reason we are going at the forefront of our hearts and minds. That we simply have made the effort to come to the Dominican Republic to serve is a visible part of our testimony. But do not let it stop there.

Please think about your testimony: how you were, how accepting Christ's love and forgiveness has changed you, how your life is different now.

Sometimes thinking this through can help you to focus. It is not necessary for you to share this but it is powerful if you do. Please also consider attending tyhe evangelism training on November 18 at 9am which will be "Sharing Your Testimony".

Your first step may be to share with other team members, remember we are all imperfect but in this together. We are a team with God at the center.

Then consider sharing with the Guesthouse and Dominican staff.

Please don't sweat the language barrier! We will always have Dominican translators with us.

We love because God first loved us.

1 John 4:19

Nosotros amamos, porque Él nos amó primero.

1 Juan 4:19
Missycleaverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05176460275126040832noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3246617989307733633.post-51404558428590909992023-09-12T15:37:00.002-05:002023-09-21T15:28:31.179-05:00Mission Retreat will be rescheduled

Due to unforeseeable circumstances the Short-term Mission Retreat scheduled for this weekend, September 22-24, will be rescheduled. Please continue to pray for the customs process to go smoothly and that the container arrives at a reasonable time for its final destination. God has blessed us with a united spirit of loving and serving others. Our time in the Dominican Republic may have been short but the seeds planted, words shared, and actions witnessed have long-term impacts on those we served, served with, and ourselves. Please continue to pray for someone to come alongside and nurture those seeds, for protection from the enemy as he strives to tarnish work accomplished with almost truths, and for our spiritual growth and unity as we return to our schedules and life. May the work the Spirit has been doing within us also be nurtured into a stronger foundation in Him.

Philippians 2:1-8

"Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being in the appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross." <span class="font" style="font-family: "helvetica neue", helvetica, sans-serif, sans-serif;">NASB

Second, there are some questions we would like you to take time over the next few days to answer and record in your Mission Team Manual and share with us at our next meeting (date TBD).

Did the mission meet your expectations? We have been so blessed with safe and smooth travels, good health, and unity in the Spirit. The in-country team here has taken such good care of us and we are leaving encouraged and pray we have been as encouraging to them as they have been to us. God has been so good and we are looking forward to sharing details after we are home. For now here are some pictures.

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoP7SqyN2CVgMDodJGIiht_ZS1mfMs24F-WnHzoh1_9AwoKlDeDZdOudSSjMPkrAdzOHxJA-HHIyusLlWhPiYeQY6ZBkZkBF2wUZ1ft6II_RmsMtcVNDclTf_GhT_6yWFBERqU09OIzaY_waMOwsaGiL1w4jlrGfkOdy6t8DP9sxsUPRtllDRb6w0EEQ/s724/C88A9822-C93F-4560-A7D9-0F5C1FAEBA12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Currently each passenger is allowed 1 checked bag less than 50 pounds, 1 carry-on and 1 personal item.

The fewer personal items you bring the better. You will need to haul your stuff around the airport and at the hotel :-} so pack as light as possible. Please do not bring any valuable items or sensitive electronics. Laundry is done at the guesthouse each day.
